The class is a unique marriage of flamenco and modern dance styles. Combining elements of Horton, Graham and traditional flamenco techniques, dancers will learn percussive footwork and rhythmic movement.
The class emphasizes musicality and listening with the body. The movement becomes one with the sound - as rhythm is felt in the feet, hands, chest and spirits - we explore different ways of interpreting the music. Students will learn to count and dance in different time signatures and execute stylized choreography. Always dancing within the compás, the musical measures dictate limbs.
Expression, breath, and gesture guide the dancers through the warm up and into across-the-floor and center sequences. Principles of flamenco will be taught including floreo (ornamental hand movements), braceo (carriage of the arms), and marcaje (marking steps). These skills will be taught in tandem with basic modern dance techniques, for example opposition, spiral, weight shifting and contraction and release.
This class is suitable for beginners and advanced dancers who would like to expand their versatility and dance vocabulary. All ages and experience levels welcome!
